What makes a good film? For 25-year-old Kenyan film director Hanigun Kwenya, it’s a good film script. And according to him, Africa’s creative film and TV industry is on a steady upward trajectory because of it.
“People are able to see African content being marketed within other African countries rather than shipping them outside for foreign support. A Platform like MultiChoice has created services [where] anyone is able to access content from anywhere in the continent, for example, Africa Magic and Maisha Magic. This has led to African people appreciating their content more,” says Kwenya.
His favourite films include The Colour Purple and Slumdog Millionaire, and his favourite African film stars are Kenyan actress Nancy Wanjiku Karanja, Nigeria’s Ini Edo and the late Benson Wanjau, popularly known as Mzee Ojwang. Alongside film, Kwenya is also passionate about travel, and hopes to refine his filmmaking skills at the MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy.
