Recently-graduated Blessing ‘Goldihyah’ Bulus has wanted to be a filmmaker since childhood. Born in Lagos, Blessing believes that film is one of the strongest tools that can be used to communicate with virtually anyone. Because of this, she has a desire to learn the nitty gritty of filmmaking beyond being behind the camera.

“My love for film grew even stronger after my exposure to cinema films and since then, I have always wanted to study film. I had always wondered how places, moments and events were being captured and communicated [through film]. I couldn’t understand how the magic was made hence, I knew I wanted to learn how to do the magic myself,” Blessing explains.

As well as her fondness for the Bible and nonfiction literature, Blessing’s favourite films include Akeelah and the Bee, Beasts of No Nation, Phone Swap and Picture Perfect.

When it comes to the best thing about Africa, Blessing believes that it is the continent’s people, its resilience, cultural diversity and history that make it stand out.

It’s no wonder then that some of her favourite international film start hail from the continent, including David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o, Djimon Hounsou and Idris Elba.

As a MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy student, Blessing aims to become a professional filmmaker who creates quality films which in turn create jobs for other young creatives. She also hopes to follow in the footsteps of industry heavyweights such as Nigerian filmmakers Femi Odugbemi, Niyi Akinmolayan and Kemi Adetiba.
