“The future of Africa’s film industry is heading in the right direction,” says emerging Malawian videographer Jonathan Kapumba. “So far I have seen individuals using Red cameras and Black Magic cameras and serious directing especially in film industries in South African productions and Nollywood.” Dreaming of one day becoming a director of photography and documentary maker, 27-year-old Jonathan is hoping to one day create a short documentary film called Bridging, showcasing talent amongst the youth in Malawi with the aim of bridging the gaps between the youth and their ambitions. At the Multichoice Talent Factory, Jonathan says he would “like to improve my skills in camera work. I want to reach that international standards as a director of photography.”
The availability of resources and working together in the African film industry is essential to developing the market, says Jonathan. And adds that it’s necessary for creatives to “learn to use the available resources wisely. Like if there is small budget, create a short film than a long one to impress the society. When I am successfully done with the training, I will be able to share with my fellow upcoming filmmaker as I benefit from them too.”
