If there’s anything that 23-year-old freelance videographer and editor Joshua Wango could add to Africa’s creative film and TV industry, it would be his creativity and the ability to tell bona fide African stories.

Born in Nairobi, Wango’s favourite films include 1992 Kenyan film Saikati, Senegalese classic Touki Bouki and American war film Brave Heart. His favourite film actors include Daniel Kaluuya, Daniel Day Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio and actress Lupita Nyong’o.

As part of the Class of 2019, Wango hopes to learn more about the professional and international standards of doing films. He is also eager to take advantage of the chance to interact with other filmmakers from the continent and their stories.

“Africa is diverse in the stories that are shown and told. There is also willingness from creatives to bridge cultural or social borders to tell Pan-African stories. Moreover, African audiences readily consume new local content,” says Wango. Besides film and TV, he is also passionate about wildlife, cosmology and technology.
